Most Common Residues Left at Crime Scenes

Most Common Residues Left at Crime Scenes
January 5, 2022 by Xtreme Cleaner's

A crime scene can happen anywhere, at any time and ensuring the thorough inspection and decontamination of the premises is incredibly important. When residues that are left behind aren’t properly sanitized, there is a high risk of spreading pathogens which makes the space dangerous. While there can be many different types of residues left at crime scenes, also known as trace evidence, there are a few that are quite common. Keep reading to learn more about the most common types of trace evidence found in crime scenes.

What is trace evidence?

According to Universal Class, trace evidence is small or microscopic materials that may be overlooked at a crime scene. There are hundreds of types of trace evidence, including hair, dirt, clothing, and bodily fluids brought in or out of a core crime scene by the perpetrator. Trace evidence is known to cling to unexpected surfaces, and therefore the thorough cleaning by professionals who know where to look and what to do is incredibly important.

Blood residue

Blood is one of the most common residues found at crime scenes and can show up in many different forms. Igor Lednev, a researcher from the University at Albandy, has done extensive research on how to analyze bodily fluids like blood, sweat, saliva, and seminal and vaginal fluids and secretions. According to Lednev, blood is the most common body fluid found at the scene of a violent crime and can be the most valuable in the amount and types of information it can provide.

From sprays and splatters on surfaces to drops and puddles, blood can travel far and wide and be difficult to find all traces. While law enforcement officers and crime scene analysts will be on the lookout for signs of blood to collect evidence, they are not responsible for cleaning any blood they find. In fact, once the space has been released back to the owner, this is an important time to work with professional cleaners who have training in locating and decontaminating blood residue.

Other common residues found

Crime scenes can be filled with residues left behind, especially because they are the scenes of trauma and with trauma comes the unexpected. Some other common residues often found include hair, bodily fluids, fingerprints, gunshot residue, and even plant spores or bits of dirt and minerals. Since micro and macroscopic substances burrow into the weave of materials, it’s so important to clean everything thoroughly and efficiently.

Biohazard cleanup companies

One of the biggest myths that many people believe is that first responders and law enforcement officers are responsible for crime scene clean up. Instead, it’s up to the property owner to have the space cleaned and decontaminated and if it’s not done correctly, it can cause lasting damage. This is when it’s important to work with companies that specialize in biohazard cleanup like Xtreme Cleaners.
